Iceland is known for its breathtaking nature, from glistening glaciers to spouting geysers. In just eight days you can discover quite a bit of this extraordinary country. With a rental car you can go on an adventure and discover the most beautiful places. Below is a suggested route along the highlights of Iceland.

Day 1-3: The Golden Circle

Begin your journey in the capital city of Reykjavík, a bustling city of colorful houses and vibrant culture. From here you can explore the famous Golden Circle, a popular route that takes you past three of Iceland's most iconic sights:

  • Thingvellir National Park: Here you will find the Mid-Atlantic Ridge lying above sea level, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are drifting apart.
  • Geysir Geothermal Area: Marvel at the spouting geysers, including Strokkur that regularly shoots a jet of water as much as 30 meters into the air.
  • Gullfoss: This impressive waterfall plunges into a deep gorge with thunderous roar.

Day 4-5: The south coast

Continue your journey to the south coast, where you will drive past impressive glaciers and black sand beaches. Visit the Sólheimajökull glacier, where you can take a glacier hike, and admire the beautiful Skógafoss waterfall. Make a stop at the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, where you can view the extraordinary basalt formations and seal colony.

Day 6-7: The southeast

Travel further to southeastern Iceland and visit Skaftafell National Park. Here you can hike among the glaciers and enjoy the beautiful nature. Visit the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, where large icebergs calve from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Take a boat trip among the icebergs and enjoy the unique scenery.

Day 8: Return to Reykjavík

On the last day of your trip you can return to Reykjavík. Visit the Harpa concert hall, an impressive building with unique architecture. Or relax in one of the many hot springs found in the Reykjavík area.

Tips:
- Best travel time: The best time to visit Iceland is in the summer months (June to August), when days are long and temperatures are pleasant.
- Rental car: A rental car is essential to explore Iceland at your own pace.
