RV trip across America - the ultimate vacation by Vakantiebeurs Brand Marketing Manager, Marleen. Marleen tells; ''If you like adventure, but don't want to go completely back to basics, an RV trip is in my opinion the perfect way to discover West America. A while back I made this trip and this is really my dream trip, which I would do over again any year. That's why I like to share my ultimate itinerary for West America by motorhome (or car)."
San Francisco
The city of San Francisco is perfect to start your trip. Because of the time difference from Amsterdam to America, you will wake up early and my tip is to start the day early with a stop at prison island Alcatraz. The rest of the day will give you time to see the city, with highlights including the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39 and the cable car.
Yosemite
The first National Park (NP) from San Francisco is Yosemite. There are numerous beautiful campsites in the middle of nature, and you will notice that you are in nature right away. Light the campfire, spot stray deer and unwind because there is no internet or phone coverage here. In Yosemite NP you will find many beautiful hiking trails. We made the hike towards the Yosemite Falls Overlook, a big climb, but well worth it.
Las Vegas (via Death Valley)
From nature toward the hustle and bustle, from Yosemite NP the route continues through Death Valley to bustling Las Vegas. It is quite a long drive towards Las Vegas, where sometimes you will encounter nothing and no one for hours, only to see a city emerge from nowhere. Just outside Las Vegas you have many good campgrounds, where you can park your RV. An uber or cab will get you to Las Vegas in minutes. Have a drink, walk around and feast your eyes! Not only are the surroundings an attraction, but so are the people walking around.
Zion & Bryce Canyon
Two parks that are close to each other and Las Vegas are Zion NP and Bryce Canyon NP. Despite being fairly close to each other, they are vastly different and both are immensely worth visiting. We did in Zion NP the well-known Angels Landing trail, an exciting hike for which you should not be afraid of heights.
Arches National Park & Monument Valley
In the state of Utah is the park Arches, which is known for the stone arches formed by nature. A special park that you do not want to miss on a tour of America. Of course you continue your route towards Monument Valley, because when you think of America this is of course the ultimate image and you really feel like you have landed in a western movie.
Grand Canyon (via Page)
The route continues towards Grand Canyon, America's most famous NP. Before you get here, the town of Page is a nice stopover. Pass by the Horseshoe Bend here, for stunning views and Antelope Canyon, where you get a special view up under the rocks.
Joshua Tree National Park & Palm Springs
The last national park in this road trip is Joshua Tree, known for ... the Joshua Tree. You can stay overnight in Palm Springs, which is a nice stop between Grand Canyon and Los Angeles. Besides, it's really close to Joshua Tree.
Los Angeles
To end the round trip, Los Angeles is a special city full of highlights. Of course you don't want to miss the famous Hollywood sign, walk on the Hollywood walk of fame and cycle along Venice Beach towards Santa Monica. Spending the night in Los Angeles is highly recommended at Malibu Beach, here you have a great campsite with sea views and sometimes you can even spot dolphins. Continue back to San Francisco via Highway 1, and route with fantastic views along the sea.
In San Francisco the motorhome is returned and the trip ends. Overall, I would recommend at least 3 weeks for this, ideally 4 weeks....
